What Is Flex Shaft Drain Cleaning?
Flex shaft drain cleaning uses specialized chains or cleaning heads that rotate at high speed inside the drain line. As the cleaning head spins, it removes grease, scale, roots and other buildup from the pipe walls.
Unlike traditional drain cabling, which is often used to break through a blockage and restore flow, flex shaft equipment can be used when additional mechanical cleaning of the pipe is needed.
We don't use flex shaft cleaning on every clogged drain. We choose the cleaning method based on the condition of the line and what we're trying to accomplish.
When Does Flex Shaft Cleaning Make Sense?
Not every clogged drain needs flex shaft cleaning. We may recommend it when a line has significant buildup remaining after flow is restored or when material has accumulated along the pipe walls.
Flex shaft cleaning may be particularly effective for:
Grease & Sludge — Heavy buildup in kitchen and other drain lines
Scale & Deposits — Material accumulated along the inside of the pipe
Roots — Certain types of root intrusion that can be mechanically removed
Recurring Buildup — Lines that repeatedly develop problems because material remains on the pipe walls

Why Camera Inspection Matters
Opening a clogged drain tells us that water is flowing again. It doesn't always tell us what caused the blockage—or what may still be inside the pipe.
When conditions allow, a sewer camera inspection helps us see what's happening inside the line after flow has been restored. We can look for remaining buildup, roots, damaged piping, separations, bellies, and other conditions that may contribute to recurring drain problems.
That information helps us determine whether additional cleaning with a flex shaft makes sense or whether the line needs a different solution.
